There has been quite an influx of press, so here’s the beginning of it. Thanks so much to Nadia for all her tips! :D
MoviesOnline caught up with director Mary Stuart Masterson at the Los Angeles press day for her new movie, “The Cake Eaters,” starring Kristen Stewart (“Twilight”).
Kristen turns in a fantastic performance as Georgia Kaminski, a terminally ill teenage girl who wants to experience love before it’s too late. Two weeks from now, Kristen will begin shooting “New Moon,” the highly anticipated follow-up to “Twilight,” one of the most successful films of 2008 grossing over $300 million worldwide. We asked Mary Stuart for the scoop on what it was like directing the lovely and talented Kristen in “The Cake Eaters” and here’s what she had to tell us:
Q: Can you talk about the casting Kristen Stewart and how that came about?
Mary: Kristen was somebody Jayce (Bartok) and I were both interested in from the beginning. I flew out here and met with her about 4 months before we started shooting and was instantly struck with her tremendous intelligence and also her sense of herself. She was truly grounded and has a power and ferocity about her that is so perfect for Georgia and yet in this delicate body that was also necessary to play the role. I met her and I just knew. That was the process there. She said yes which was nice. She loved the role.
Q: Did the interest in picking up this film for distribution suddenly increase when Kristen was cast in Twilight?Mary: Oh yeah, definitely, absolutely, without question. I don’t know if that’s 100 per cent but it certainly helps a lot because she’s got such a huge fan base now.
Thank you to Nadia for the tip! Here is a really in-depth interview with Kristen and her The Cake Eaters co-star, Aaron Stanford.
Q: I feel like I’ve been at a Kristen Stewart movie fest. I just saw you in Adventureland and now The Cake Eaters. Which came first?
Kristen: This definitely came first in the succession of films you’re talking about and Adventureland I did last year. I think we finished up around October.
Q: Where did you start with this character? Was it with the movements and the voice?
Kristen: I was so intimated by the character that I didn’t start any physicality before, literally, the first day of shooting. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Mary Stuart set me up with a lot of material and information and Sam and Alex Bode. They’re two girls that have the disease (Friedreich’s Ataxia) and they were too generous. They’re an amazing family. They recorded a lot of video of themselves speaking and Mary Stuart interviewing them. I don’t know. I was just sort of obsessed with it for maybe three weeks prior and then delved into it very impulsively. It was just something that I had to wrap my head [around]. I couldn’t physically do it until the day we started shooting because it felt cheap like I was faking something and, until it was actually real in the moment we were actually doing it and I was actually portraying this person, like I had to, then it felt right to do it. But, before that, it just didn’t feel right. It felt strange.

As ‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart gets ready to take a bite out of the highly anticipated ‘New Moon,’ ET is with the 18-year-old star to talk about her new indie flick, ‘The Cake Eaters.’ But first, Kristen is revealing secrets about the big Stephenie Meyer follow-up — and how ‘Twilight’ has changed her life!
“It’s been good for me, it’s been only good,” says Kristen of life after the release of the vampire film phenomenon. “It really facilitates work that I love. It makes it much easier. I don’t have to fight to get into a movie that I really want to do. It’s not a fight anymore, and it was.”
As for ‘New Moon,’ which she’s about to start filming, Kristen says she’s “really excited,” but it’s “a big job.”
“It’s a lot different, also, from the first,” she adds. “It’s a very different story. A lot happens: [Bella] doesn’t have [Edward] anymore, and she’s also in a place where she has to step up and kind of become more mature, and to see her deal with life without him is going to be interesting. … It’s all very epic and convoluted.”
