What a great read! Thanks to kstewsbutt for the heads up on this!
Before the first Twilight movie in 2008, I was a much more open person. Now I spend a lot of time looking at the floor in public in an attempt not to get noticed. It can get a little boring. But whatever sacrifices I’ve had to make as a rising star, my job makes up for it a hundredfold.
I won the Orange Rising Star Award at the Baftas last week. As I stood on stage at the Royal Opera House, I felt overwhelmed – in front of all these industry people, whom I don’t just admire, but who are the foundation of what I want to do. It’s hard to explain how it feels being in the same room as Kate Winslet. Perhaps it’s similar to how a Twilight fan feels on seeing me in person.
Some people say I’m anti-Hollywood, but I’m really not at all. I just think it’s pretty weird to show up at things that you have no reason to go to. To go out just for the sake of it is plain ridiculous.
I’ve been asked a million times in interviews about being a role model. I don’t really like to consider it. I’m aware that people look up to me, but I am myself for myself and not for anybody else. I choose my work impulsively.
I’ve been walking around London in a hoody these last few days looking at all the old buildings. It’s all fine until a diehard fan notices your sneakers. But I can always see a crowd and turn around and walk the other way.
In terms of history, we have nothing in LA. Here you can feel Jack the Ripper lurking around every corner. It’s nicer here because there’s a sense that I’m a real person. Perhaps I’m more of a novelty. In LA I tend to get people who gawk at me like I’m an animal, take pictures and scream things at me. There’s no way of being open in public anymore. There’s a five-minute exchange every 30 seconds that prevents me from even buying a loaf of bread at the grocery store.

Kristen is a very talented, intelligent person. I know that some day there will be another young person in her shoes, in awe of her just like she was of Kate Winslet @the BAFTAS. She will have a very glorious and storied career. I am sad that people don’t have the understanding that she is just a young girl trying to do her best. She is very serious about acting, not exactly eager about being a LA tourist attraction.
Looks like she feels better in London. That’s good. Maybe one day they’ll live in both areas.
She’s amazing.
That’s way I love her, she’s such the opposite of Miley Cyrus for example. I mean she isn’t into the all glamorous lifestyle which I think is great, she just wants to tell stories and be normal. It’s very rare that you see a girl in hollywood who is like that. She’s down to earth and nice! She loves Bella and is protective of her but I can see how annoying it can get. Ppl need to calm it down a bit with twilight. Being a teen is hard enough and yea she’s trying her best. She likes her fans and is appreciate of them! But the reason she never smiles in paps pics is b/c who wants creepy old men taking photos of you? Um ew. If I met her I swear I wouldn’t say a word about twilight, I’m interested in her other projects! =) I learned that if she ever comes off as negative, it’s not directed towards us the fans, it’s the pressuring lifestyle that can get overwhelming.
Some years ago, my husband and I were at a play in NYC. During intermission, the audience was allowed on stage to view the set. We noticed we were standing to an actor from a popular soap opera and casually made a joke about the soap opera to him. He laughed. we started chatting and he introduced us to his gf. We were having a very nice, normal conversation when a group of young girls in the audience noticed him and began screaming. He apologized to us and commented he needed to leave asap. I can imagine that is how Kristen feels but tenfold. No one wants people screaming at them – they are not a freak show but normal people who want to be treated as such. I feel for her – she is still so young. I have noticed how she was more relaxed and open in interviews before Twilight but now she is much more guarded and nervous. The media portray Kristen as some miserable person who never smiles. Would you want some taking your pic when you’re just running out to the store or just trying to have some time with friends? She is a beautiful young talented actress – I wish the media would let her do her job.
Kate, I agree with you. I have noticed that when she is approached quietly and politely fans can talk to her and get pictures taken with her, etc. But when there are large amount of screaming people coming at you with cameras it can be scary. She is not the only actor who has said this. Many a famous actor has said that it is overwhelming. No one can be totally prepared for this. It’s not like it happened gradually either, she was happily working on her films and Twilight came and overnight it skyrocketed to what it is today!
Yes… The only thing she needs is peace and respect for her space. Fans can be dangerous sometimes… We must understand that she is a person, with no doubt, beyond anything. Sure, we love her, but LOVE means give space and preserve the individuality too.
